Each year since 1970, we have celebrated Earth Day on April 22 to remind the world that we need to take care of our home – our planet — and to reflect on our relationship with it.
In the events industry, we are committed to integrating best practices for the environment into our events while demonstrating corporate and individual commitment to sustainable practices. We are supporting the sustainability standards and guidelines, and raising awareness and educating employees, as well as event attendees, about the environment conservation.
And at the same time, we acknowledge the difficulties and challenges we face when trying to make our world better. Earth Day is a great opportunity for all of us to show our commitment to making events more sustainable.
Event organizers, destinations, venues and numerous suppliers have an amazing opportunity to celebrate it both in their offices and with their teams not only during Earth Day itself, but also all the year round when organizing events and sharing their knowledge with their many stakeholders.
Earth Day 2024
On Earth Day 2024, EIC was especially encouraged and inspired by the growing number of global business events industry colleagues who have shown their commitment to sustainability. Whether it’s through pursuing the individual Sustainable Event Professional Certificate or working to achieve the EIC Sustainable Event Standards, our industry is making major strides towards a more sustainable future for all.
For example, the Kenes Group, a global PCO (Professional Conference Organiser) with employees in 18 locations around the world, developed a series of Earth Day activities for their more than 350 employees, all focused on ways to increase the positive impact on the circular economy. Several offices held their own Earth Day Bazaars and Donations Day, where employes were encouraged to bring in clothes and books for a “swap and shop” activity. Anything not picked by a fellow employee was donated to local charities and non-profits.
How did you celebrate Earth Day? We’d love to hear your stories.
