Mary-Ann Urbanovich, MS, CMP Fellow, CMP-HC: Leading with Purpose, Knowledge, and Impact
This month, we shine a spotlight on one of the industry’s most seasoned professionals, Mary-Ann Urbanovich, MS, CMP Fellow, CMP-HC—a proud CMP for over 20 years and a trailblazer in healthcare meetings. Mary-Ann earned her Healthcare (HC) designation as part of the CMP-HC beta class eleven years ago and was inducted into the inaugural class of CMP Fellows.
We spoke with Mary-Ann about the pivotal role CMP certification has played in her career, and her advice for those rising through the ranks.
EIC: You’ve been a CMP for two decades and a CMP-HC for over a decade. How has certification shaped your career?
Mary-Ann:
My CMP-HC designation has been a cornerstone in my career development. It’s given me the confidence and credibility to collaborate seamlessly across different functions in our organization. Working in biotech, where regulations and compliance are critical, it’s essential to understand the unique challenges each department faces—and my certification has helped me do that effectively.
EIC: How has the designation supported your role specifically in the healthcare and biotech space?
Mary-Ann:
In my current role, the CMP-HC has expanded my understanding of global guidelines and deepened my knowledge of the complexities of product development. With the constantly evolving regulations—not just for Healthcare Professionals but across the entire industry—being CMP-HC certified means I’m equipped to manage multiple projects with confidence. It helps ensure that my contributions align with our organization’s goals and mission, which is incredibly rewarding.
EIC: What advice do you have for fellow CMPs, especially those newer to the field?
Mary-Ann:
Earning your CMP is a testament to your professionalism and dedication to the events industry. But it doesn’t stop there. With the credential comes a responsibility to lead and mentor. You don’t have to be on the cover of a trade magazine or speaking at every conference to make a difference. Each of us contributes—whether by mentoring a colleague, setting a high standard in our work, or staying committed to lifelong learning. That’s how we elevate the profession and support the next generation of CMPs.
EIC: What keeps you motivated after all these years?
Mary-Ann:
The people. The evolution of our profession. The opportunity to keep learning. Being a CMP Fellow is an honour, but more than that, it’s a reminder of the collective impact we can have when we uphold the values of the CMP community. I’m proud to be part of that.
